Accessibility statement

What we are aiming for

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. That means you should be able to change how it looks to suit you, get around it without a mouse, and read it with a screen reader.

We aim to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 (opens in a new tab), which is the standard UK public sector websites are held to. JSENSE is a charity rather than a public body, so we are not required to meet it. We have chosen to.

How far we meet it

This website partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 level AA. “Partially” because of the things listed under “What is not right yet” below — everything else we know of meets the standard.

The statement covers everything at jsense.org.uk. It does not cover the donation pages, which are run for us by another organisation on their own website.

Settings you can change

The accessibility button at the bottom right of every page opens a panel of settings. They apply to the whole site and stay on while you are browsing:

• Text size — make everything larger or smaller.
• Reading font — switch between the standard font, Atkinson Hyperlegible, OpenDyslexic and Verdana.
• Highlight links — underline and mark every link.
• High contrast and dark mode.
• Pause animations — stop everything that moves. The site also does this on its own if you have asked your device to reduce motion.
• Highlight focus — a stronger outline when moving by keyboard.
• Large cursor.

What we have done

• Text and controls are checked to meet the contrast levels the guidelines set, in light mode, dark mode and high contrast, on every page.
• The whole site can be used by keyboard alone, and the focus outline is visible wherever you are on the page.
• Headings, landmarks and labels are marked up so screen readers announce the page in a sensible order.
• Images that carry meaning have text descriptions. The rest are marked as decoration, so a screen reader passes over them.
• The page works at 400% zoom and down to a 320px screen without anything being cut off or needing to be scrolled sideways.
• Links to documents say what format they are, how long they are and how large the file is before you open one.
• Nothing flashes, autoplays or moves without you doing something first. A few things move when you scroll to them or open them — the figures at the foot of the homepage, the hero artwork, the mobile menu — and all of them stop if you turn on “Pause animations” or have asked your device to reduce motion.

What is not right yet

We would rather tell you than let you find out. As things stand:

• Our policies are PDFs. A PDF does not reflow the way a web page does, cannot take your own font or colours, and is harder to read on a phone. Every one of them has real, selectable text rather than being a scan, so a screen reader can read them — but they are still PDFs. Ask us and we will send you any of them in large print, on paper, or as a document you can change the size and colour of.
• Body text is set in a light weight, which some people find harder to read. The text size and reading font settings help; we are keeping it under review.
• Some documents come from other organisations and we cannot guarantee they are accessible. Ask us and we will get you the content another way.

How we check

Every page is tested automatically against WCAG 2.2 in light mode, dark mode and high contrast, on a desktop screen and a phone-sized one, and the site is not published if any of those fail. Colour contrast is measured rather than eyeballed. We also check the site by keyboard alone. This is not a substitute for testing with disabled people, which we have not done yet.

Tell us about a problem

If something on this site stops you doing what you came to do, please tell us. It is useful to know what you were trying to do and what happened, but do not worry about describing it precisely — we would rather hear roughly than not at all.

We will reply within five working days. If you need anything on this site in a different format — large print, plain text, or read to you over the phone — ask and we will sort it out.
